About Us

The best place to start talking about our congregation is with our name- Beth Emet the Free Synagogue. The first question nearly everyone asks is, "What does Free Synagogue mean?" The answer is that we unequivocally support the freedom to express a full range of ideas from our bimah and within our community.

More than half a century ago, our founding members chose a name that symbolized a commitment to truth and open expression. Today, under the energetic and compassionate spiritual guidance of Rabbi Peter Knobel, Rabbi Andrea London, and Cantor Erin Frankel, that commitment extends to all aspects of our communal life. A leading congregation in the Reform movement, we uniquely blend our respect for tradition with our willingness to explore innovative, egalitarian approaches to worship, education, social justice, and community building.

Our diverse membership includes traditional and nontraditional families, as well as individuals of all ages, who come from many different places seeking to fulfill a variety of needs. Together, we create a vibrant and inclusive community bound together by our shared dedication to living meaningful Jewish lives.
