Lipman Pike

Lipman Pike, the first Jewish baseball player, will come to Chicago May 26, 1998. He will be at Wrigley Field to play baseball with the Chicago Cubs. Lip will teach the Cub's players how to hit home runs in clusters. Lip will be the ump for the game. He might even sing "The Star Spangled Banner" and "Take Me Out To the Ball Game."


Guess who I am ??????

I want to come to Chicago. I would donate to all the Chicago Jewish funds. I would teach baseball at Jewish schools. I could also teach. You know, I got great grades in school even though I play baseball all the time. If Jewish people in Chicago are teased, then I will help them fight back.

I could play for the Chicago Cubs; I would improve them a lot.

Also I'm a great basketball player. I'm really tall. I was in the Hall-of-Fame for Baseball.

Jonas Edward Salk

Dr. Jonas Edward Salk is coming to Chicago to work for a hospital. He will lecture at Northwestern University. He will talk about how he discovered the polio vaccine. He will talk about the experimental process.


Rose Schneiderman

Rose Schneiderman will be speaking November 1st, 1933 at 7:30 p.m. at the Museum of Science and Industry. She will be representing President Roosevelt speaking about the National Recovery Administration.

There will be a question and answer period about any worker benefit issues you may have.

Miss Schneiderman is recognized as a leader in drafting and passing legislation concerning many workers rights that they have today.


Touro Comes To See Real Estate

Judah Touro, famous philanthropist and soldier is visiting Chicago to see if there is real estate to buy. This would be his first real estate outside New Orleans. He's also coming to see if his steamships can go in Lake Michigan. He might give money to Beth Emet Synagogue while his is in Chicago.


Judith Kaplan Eisenstein

Judith Kaplan Eisenstein is coming to Evanston to do the Hike for the Homeless. She was the first girl to have a Bat Mitzvah and works hard for good causes.


Ernestine Rose

On April 3, 1998, Ernestine Rose will come to Chicago. She will be staying at the Raddison Hotel. She will be speaking at the Symphony Hall (10:00-11:00) about her life and her fight for women's rights.


Einstein Is Back!

Albert Einstein is coming to Chicago. He will speak at the Rosemont Horizon on March 31, 1998 at 6:00 p.m. Albert Einstein is a world famous scientist also known for promoting world peace. He will speak about how we should work to get rid of all the nuclear bombs in the world.

Rabbi Akiva Comes To Chicago!

Rabbi AkivaHave you every heard of Rabbi Akiva? He is a Jewish scholar and leader who led a revolution. He is an expert in interpreting the text of the Bible. His talk will take place on May 24th at Beth Emet. Afterwards, Rabbi Akiva will be answering questions about Jewish traditions, laws and opinions and interpretations of the Bible.

Rabbi Akiva loves peace. He decided to become a fighter when Hadrian decided to make Jerusalem a pagan city.


Come Listen To A Great Female Leader Speak!

Rebecca Gratz is a great Jewish educator and she's coming to Chicago to speak about her life! Rebecca has dedicated most of her time promoting Jewish education in the U.S. She has founded many orphanages and religious schools. She also helps the poor in many ways! Come experience this remarkable leader tell you about her life. This event will take place on Sunday, April 19, 1998 at Columbia College, 600 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago, Illinois.


Emma Lazarus Coming To Chicago

Saturday, April 11, 1997, Emma Lazarus is coming to Symphony Hall by plane. She will be performing some of her poems including "The Great Colossus". She will bring the Statue of Liberty Here. She will engrave names of all people there on another plaque and place it on the statue. There will be a raffle to determine 5 people who will go back to New York with Emma. Raffle tickets due by Friday. Money raised by raffle will be used to give teachers higher salaries. The 5 lucky winners of the raffle go to New York with Emma for a free tour.


Sandy Koufax

Chicago asked Sandy to come to Chicago. He is. He will make a speech live on TV. He was born on December 20, 1933. His career choices were to be and architect, baseball player or a basketball player. He chose baseball and had a great career. Sandy was a great left-handed pitcher. The last five years he led the league in ERA. He was elected to the gall of Fame with 344 votes, the highest total in 40 years of voting. Sandy never forgot he was Jewish and would not pitch on the High Holidays even during the World Series.


Blanch Wolf

Blanche Wolf will be coming to North Branch Public Library in Evanston, Illinois to give a speech about her new action figure, which will look like herself holding a book. She is one of the first Jewish female publishers. She started publishing with her husband in 1915 and still is publishing. Her speech hopes to inspire women from all over the world.


Levi Strauss To Speak At Arie Crown

Levi Strauss, a world famous jeans maker is coming to Chicago to speak about his new ideas for Levi jeans. He will talk about how the use of rivets and sailcloth canvas makes the strongest jeans. Levi Strauss was world renown because he started a company that did well making jeans and overalls for gold miners in California. He is also a famous philanthropist who donated the first Synagogue in San Francisco and to orphanages in San Francisco. He was born in Bavaria, Germany on February 26, 1829.


Kirk Douglas

Kirk Douglas is coming to Chicago. He was born in 1916. You should come because he will sign copies of his books like The Ragman's Son. He will talk about his life.


Emma Lazarus

I am Emma Lazarus and I am coming to Chicago because a couple people working in the Sears Tower want me to write a poem for them to put on the side of the building. My poem will be about welcoming oppressed people to Chicago. I will be in Chicago for 5 weeks to work on my poem and visit the sights of the city. I especially want to visit Beth Emet, a temple near Chicago because people say it is so nice there. I am 15 and I don't want to go back to New York because Chicago is so nice. I wrote the poem and the two people loved it.


Albert Einstein

Extra! Extra! - [May 6, 1983] Albert Einstein is coming to Chicago to give the D'var Torah. Albert is famous for his theory of relativity, E=MC2. That means energy equals mass times velocity of light squared. He will come to Beth Emet on March 29, 1983. He will discuss why he refused to be president of Israel. He will also play the violin and talk about physics.

Services begin at 8:00 p.m. An Oneg Shabbat will follow.

I came to Chicago because I want to visit the Bahai temple. It has good architecture. I also want to see the skyscrapers and go to the top. I want to go to see the shipping malls and ride the carriages pulled by horses. I would like to eat at the variety of restaurant. That's why I came to Chicago.

Fighting Rabbi come to Chicago

On April 10, 1998 Elkan Voorsanger is coming to Chicago. He is coming to the Chicago Historical Society. He is going to talk about this experience as a Jew fighting in World War II. He is also going to talk about leadership.


Strauss To Speak

Levi Strauss is coming to Northwestern University to talk about why and why not kids should be allowed to wear jeans to school. He will also talk about how this will affect many schools' dress codes. It will be at 5:45-7:45, Friday, November 16, 1955. Refreshments will be served.

On June 11, 1998, David "Mickey" Marcus is coming to town. He will give a speech on the liberation of Dachau Concentration camp at the end of world war II "Mickey" will also tell us about his exciting adventure sneaking past British lines in Israel. He was very important in starting the new young Israeli army in 1948.


Ernestine Rose Come To The Windy City

Ernestine fought for the rights of the American woman. Ernestine took an active role in the National Woman's Suffrage Association. Ernestine will be in Chicago on the following dates: July 5th, August 17th, September 8th, October 1st, November 6th and December 25, 1882. He has invented the air freshener which we use a lot. If you want to hear what it was like to fight for women's rights, come to the Sears tower.


Lillian Talks

Please come to the Beth Emet Temple and listen to Lillian Wald speak about the importance of having a nurse at every school. Principals should especially come to pick a nurse for their school. Come on March 10, 1892 at 7:00p.m.


Men And Women Sit And Sing Together In The Synagogue

Rabbi Isaac Meyer Wise, a pioneer of Reform Judaism announced that men and women would be sitting together in the synagogue. Rabbi Wise began his career in the small town of Dzadmetz in Bohemia. He moved to America in 1846. Among his ideas were to shorten the service, have Confirmations for boys and girls in place of Bar Mitzvahs and to stop observing the second day of holidays. Some members of his temple joined with him and became Reform Jews. The others left the temple and stayed Orthodox.


Lazarus To Windy City

The gifted poet Emma Lazarus is scheduled to come to Chicago on the 1st of April. She is going to speak at Beth Emet Synagogue about her life. She is also going to read aloud from her famous poem called "The New Colossus." Tickets are available at Beth Emet at 1224 Dempster Street.


Civil War Hero Gives Speech

Sergeant Leopold Karpels is coming to the United Center to speak about the issues of he Civil War. He was one of the Jewish soldiers to get the Congressional Medal of Honor. He fought in the battle of Wilderness, Virginia. He got the medal for bravery and heroism.


Schechter To Teach

He came to teach at Beth Emet. His flight arrived 12:15 July 12. He was kind of big. He said to me, read the Torah and learn about who you are. That way we can study the Hebrew language and literature. Then he made a speech in front of all Chicago. His speech was about the united synagogue.
